The MAKS Red would have to be my favourite red that we have ever produced.

It is based on Toyota’s original 3H4 Red Mica Metallic, a deep factory red seen across a number of late-80s, 90s and early-2000s Toyotas, including the LandCruiser, Hilux, 4Runner/Surf, MR2, Celica, Supra, Corolla and Camry. On LandCruisers in particular, 3H4 became one of those colours that people remember fondly, not because many survived perfectly, but because the good ones had such a rich, understated presence. The unfortunate thing with the original 3H4 is that it often aged terribly. Many of the vehicles finished in this colour suffered from heavy fading and clear coat peel, so the version most people remember today is rarely the version Toyota would have intended. Underneath that ageing, though, was a beautiful colour: deep, warm, metallic, and very period-correct for the era.

This version was originally developed as a custom colour for MAKS Touring’s 80 Series LandCruiser. The brief was simple but hard to get right: create something that looked natural and close to factory from five metres away, but beautifully modified when viewed up close. In our eyes, and in MAK’s, we could not have landed it better.

From a distance, it still carries itself like a factory Toyota red. It suits the shape of an 80 Series, feels era-correct, and does not look overdone. It has that familiar OEM depth, just with more contrast, more life and a cleaner finish than the original ever seemed to hold onto.

Step closer, though, and the colour changes completely. The diamond silver and gold mica come through with an almost lowrider-style richness, giving the paint a subtle custom feel without turning it into something loud or unnatural. It is not a candy red, and it is not trying to be a modern hyper-flake show colour. It is a refined, nostalgic Toyota red with just enough pearl and mica to make people stop and look twice. That balance is what makes this colour special. It respects the original 3H4, but fixes the things time was never kind to. It feels factory from a distance, custom up close, and properly considered from every angle.

This colour has been emulated by other shops, but never recreated in the same way we produced it for MAK’s rig. Now, MAKS Red is available to purchase using the exact same specifications as the original MAKS Touring 80 Series LandCruiser.
